Inside, outside & inbetween
During this project, I experimented with a range of mediums; from coloured pencils and acrylic paint to black ink and thread. My aim for the project was to take something typically seen as disgusting and grotesque and turn it into something beautiful and intricate. Typically dead or dying animals are a very sad thing to imagine, but by making these different animals look still and peaceful in my work I believe allowed the viewer to more easily see the value in their lives. Just like artists such as Damien Hirst and Stuart Pearson Wright I believe some of my work challenges more contemporary beliefs and allows people to celebrate life from death instead of viewing it as distressing.
In this photograph you can see one of my main pieces of the project. It presents a dead mouse lying peacefully on a wooden floor, painted in oil paint on an A0 canvas. I chose to paint this due to the interesting viewpoint the mouse is seen from, as well as the graphic patterns in the planks of wood. These patterns contrasted nicely with the fine details seen in the mouse and really helped emphasize the aim of finding beauty in unfortunate situations.
